Paul was born in Metro Detroit to the late Donald and Patricia Welday. He was a 1981 graduate of James Madison College at Michigan State University where he majored in Justice, Morality and Constitutional Democracy.

Throughout his career, he has been an active member of the Republican party, whether it be working interning for State Representative Sandy Brotherton in 1978 and for Congressman Jack Kemp in 1980 or as a congressional aide for Congressman Joe Knollenberg. He was instrumental in the election of key candidates for several elected offices, or has run a time or two himself.

Paul was a partner at the Lansing public affairs firm Superior Capitol Consulting, as well as senior counsel for the Washington, D.C.-based government affairs firm Watts Partners and President/CEO of Renaissance Strategies. During his career, he has also served as chairman of the Oakland County Republican Party and in many leadership positions within the Michigan GOP.

His lovely wife, Valerie, was his constant companion and the mother of her two children. He is also survived by his brother, Doug, and sisters Mary Urick and Patty Graff.
