Mr. James Nathaniel Garland, 86, of Sunnydell Drive died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Garland was born March 7, 1916, in Clifton Forge, VA, to Kenner Nathaniel Garland and Susie Dora Wright Garland. Mr. Garland was a member of Old Town Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later worked in research and development of the U.S. Naval Department, from which he retired. He was a professional baseball scout for the Kansas City Royals and the Los Angeles Dodgers for 28 years. He was voted into the Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame. Mr. Garland is survived by his wife, Edna Tucker Garland of the home; a son, Jim Garland, Jr. of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Louise Carter and Janie Hoke, both of Clifton Forge, VA. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. December 11, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with the Rev. Theodore R. Ochs officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
