Joe Allen Oct. 29, 1922 - Oct. 10, 2006

Joe Allen who was a proud and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed from this life at his home in the loving arms of his family after a courageous year long battle with lung cancer.

Joe was the son of C.L. Allen, Sr. and Irene Foster Allen of Bertram, Texas. The family moved to Bertram when Joe was an infant. Through his young years, he helped with the family farm which he loved. After graduating from Bertram High School, he married Dell Maxwell of Burnet, Texas. Shortly after, he entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in California. When he returned to Bertram from the Navy, Dell and Joe left for Portland, Oregon, where he worked in the shipyards. Due to the illness of his parents, Joe and Dell returned to Bertram. He began a career with the Austin Fire Department in March of 1945, and retired as District Chief after 38-1/2 years of service. Also, with the help of his family, he owned and operated Joe Allen General Contracting business for 30 years. Joe loved and cherished his wife Dell, and was proud to be married to her for 63 years. They have three daughters, Peggy, Sharon (Sherry) and Deborah (Debby) who adored their father and will miss him greatly. Joe was a faithful, God-loving Christian and a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Hill.

Joe enjoyed meeting people and being in the business world. He loved family gatherings, being with relatives and friends, and sharing his stories. He looked forward to having breakfast with his fellow firefighters and the yearly BBQ. Joe also looked forward to traveling in his RV and seeing the great creations of this earth. His favorite was the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. He loved to travel with family and friends, and sit and watch the animals as they grazed in the valleys.

Joe was the youngest of eight children. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Estell McMurtry, Lucy Rollings, and Alberta Vesperman and his brothers, Rex Allen, C.L. Allen, Jr., Van Allen, and Bill Allen.

He is survived by his wife, Dell Allen; daughters, Peggy Sansom, Sharon Key and husband, Jim, and Debby Allen; sister-in-law, Lucill Allen; five grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Saturday morning, October 14, 2006 at the First Baptist Church at Oak Hill located at 6907 Convict Hill Road, Austin, Texas 78749. Interment followed at Cook-Walden/ Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 N. IH-35 in Pflugerville, Texas.

The family is grateful to Dr. Tweedy, Luther and Alyssa at the Southwest Regional Cancer Center; Dr. DeBehnke and Carol at the Austin Diagnostic Clinic for the care given to Joe during his illness. [Based on an obituary published in the Austin American-Statesman on 10/13/2006.]
