Marine Lance Cpl. Derek W. Jones, 21, of Salem, Ore.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; died Oct. 8 from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Asad, Iraq. Also killed were Lance Cpl. Jeremy S. Sandvick Monroe and Capt. Robert M. Secher. Derek joined the Marine Corps in 2003 and served eight months in Afghanistan before leaving for Iraq. He planned to go to college to become an architect after his service in the Marines.
