Daniel Dombroski disappeared from his vacation home on Wixom lake in Gladwin County on the evening of October 6, 2015.

According to reports in the Gladwin County Record, the Gladwin County Sheriff Department, with the assistance of the Michigan State Police, conducted multiple searches in and around the area where Dan went missing; however, during these initial searches, he was not found.

The Sheriff Department was also assisted by the Michigan Search and Rescue organization, which conducted searches throughout the neighborhood where Dombroski was last seen, and down into Midland County, to include areas near the river in Edenville. However, these searches did not locate Dan, either.

The Billings Township Dive Team assisted the Gladwin County Sheriff Department, and checked portions of Wixom lake with negative results.

The Sheriff Department continued the investigation, and interviewed people of interest. During the early morning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 17, an investigator interviewed a suspect in regards to Dan's disappearance. During the interview, the suspect admitted to having knowledge and involvement in the death of Dan Dombroski.

The suspect, Chad Alan Ballard, also provided information to the investigator as to the location of Dan's body in Beaverton township.

The Sheriff Department then, with the assistance of the Michigan State Police K-9 division, conducted a ground search of a swamp area located in Beaverton township of Gladwin County.

The Michigan State Police sent a helicopter out of Lansing to assist, and the body of Daniel James Dombroski was recovered in a wooded thicket on the edge of that swamp.

Evidence at the scene rendered probable cause that Dombroski had been killed, and this case is being treated as a homicide.

Ballard, 27, was arraigned on murder charges related to the death of Dan Dombroski in 80th District Court on Wednesday, Nov. 18. He was charged with one count of Homicide-Open Murder–Short Form. A second person has been charged with aiding and abetting in the cover-up of Dan's murder.

Who was Dan Dombroski? He was the dear father of Kylie and Dylan; beloved son of Henry and Rosemary; and brother of Michelle (Dennis), Henry (Deborah) and Kimberly (Chris). He was loved by the mother of his children, Christine.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, archery, and fishing. He spent pretty significant amounts of time with his kids, introducing them to activities that made his life so happy.

No one deserves to be murdered, but Dan Dombroski was a hard-working, industrious man who loved his family dearly and made the world a happy place. He did not deserve the fate that an angry man thrust upon him.

May God bless and keep you. May your family know that there are people who feel your pain and understand your anger and frustration. We thank you for sharing your love of Dan with us and wish you well through the long healing that follows.
