Willy was born in Astoria, Queens on November 14, 1953, a son of the late William A. and Evelyn (Collins) Grund. He became the third-generation ironworker to work for Local 40 Ironworkers of New York City where he worked for 35 years. A kind man with a courageous heart, Willy was considered a hero by all for his efforts as a rescue worker for the 9-11 recovery effort as well as the recovery efforts for the 1993 attack on the towers.

He was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Grund and a sister, Stephanie (Grund) Musgrove. Cremation rites were accorded.
