The son of Ephraim & Susan (Keeport) Swope and stepson of Catherine (LeFevre) Swope, in 1860 he was a student living with his family in Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

In 1863 he entered Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, Pa., where he remained four years.

In 1867, he then went to Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa., from which he graduated 1868. He remained at Muhlenberg for four years as a tutor and was a founding member of the Sophronian Literary Society.

Subsequently, he spent one year at Harvard University as a post graduate, and ultimately received a graduate degree from Harvard University in 1886. This was followed by a year at Union Theological Seminary, N. Y. after which he devoted his life to tutoring and teaching.

For twelve non-consecutive years he tutored in private schools of the higher grade, most notably preparing wealthy young men in New York for Harvard University. He also served as a private coach for colleges and universities for twelve non-consecutive years, He is a member of the Harvard Club of New York.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service: Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Gettysburg June 17, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 23 as a private with Co. A, 26th Pennsylvania Infantry Militia, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863.

Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Harrisburg March 9, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 14 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. A, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

On June 30, 1903, he married in New York City (Virginia also reported) to sixty-one-year-old Rebecca Antoinette Dew Wendel, "one of the wealthiest women in this country" from her father's furrier and real estate enterprises built in tandem with powerful financier John Jacob Astor. Rebecca married in defiance of her tyrannical brother John G. Wendel who forced their other sisters to remain single out of fear that a large family would dilute the family's wealth estimated at about $100,000,000. Luther and Rebecca took up residence at the Beck House (c. 1889) at 249 Central Park West,.

Luther and Beckie had no children as they both married late in life.

Surprisingly given Luther's lofty station in life if only by marriage, no obituary was found in any online newspaper archive from New York, but there were several in Adams and York County, Pennsylvania, newspapers, from where the accompanying one appears to be.
