Michael Joseph Beson, 67, was the victim of a senseless act of violence in Plant City, Florida, on April 8, 2016.

According to the MLive newspapers,
"Just 17 days before his 46th wedding anniversary, a Standish man was shot and killed while defending his wife from a purse snatcher at a Florida gas station."

He was born on July 13, 1948, in Bay City, Michigan to Joseph and Rosemary (Sullivan) Beson. He married Bonnie (Bogart) Beson on April 25, 1970. They were approaching their 46th wedding anniversary.

He was a loving father and husband. He is survived by his two children, Michael Joseph (Crystal) Beson II and daughter, Raquel Beson & Kenneth O'Dell. Mike is also survived by his three grandchildren, Chandler Beson, Desmond Batchelder, and Michael Joseph Beson III; his siblings and in-laws, Tim (Debbie) Beson, Pat (Vicky) Beson, Margie Beson (Al Moore), Joe-Joe Beson, Renee (Greg) Little, Connie & Tim Kraska, Mary Walraven, Julie & Tom Stachowski; uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends.

"It was a senseless act of violence," said Raquel Beson, who lives in the metro Detroit area. "They never got any money, they didn't get his wallet. They didn't get anything out of it."

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rosemary Beson, brother Stewart John Beson, and brother-in-law, Fred Walraven.

Mike graduated from Bay City All Saints High School, the Class of 1967. He served four years as a sergeant in the United States Air Force. Mike was a retired GM employee and the owner of B & B Market. He enjoyed talking on his HAM radio, fishing with his grandchildren, and using his mechanical skills. Mike was a respected community member, a man of integrity, and a hard worker. He will always be remembered for his gentle soul, patience, and kind, loving heart.

"They didn't do anything but take the life of (my mom's) best friend," added Mike Beson, now of Georgia.

The first Memorial mass was held on Friday, April 22, 2016, at St. Clement Catholic Church, 1104 N. Alexander Street, Plant City, FL 33563. Full Military honors were provided by MacDill Air Force Base immediately following the mass.

A second Memorial mass was held at 11 a.m. on June 4, 2016, at Prince of Peace Parish (St. Anne) in Linwood, Michigan.
