Katherine Nora McQuillan was born on July 31, 1883, in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the daughter and third of five children of Bernard J. and Augusta Senff McQuillllan. She was 50% Irish on her paternal side and 50% German on her maternal side.
The 1900 Census lists her birthdate as September 1883; that is incorrect. The application for her marriage license has her birthdate as July 31, 1883; that is correct. The tombstone date is based on her Death Certificate, which has a birthdate of July 31, 1887; that is incorrect.
Her middle initial is listed as "N." on the marriage license application and marriage certificate, and as "E." on her husband's 1918 draft registration. Her full middle name, "Nora," is only given in her mother's will.
Katherine received an 8th grade education.
In the 1900 Census and at the time of her marriage license application in 1909, her residence was 3313 Penn Avenue in the Lawrenceville neighborhood. Her sister Cecilia also listed that address on her marriage license application. The family rented.
On August 3, 1909, at age 26, Katherine married Robert James Lyon, in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, slightly northwest of Pittsburgh.
Katherine was a housewife and a longtime resident of 107 Kathleen St. in the Mount Washington neighborhood in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. She was a member of St. Justin Catholic Church at 539 Boggs Avenue in Mount Washington.
Traveling home to Pittsburgh by bus, after visiting her son, Robert James Lyon, in Tampa, Florida, Katherine died en route to City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her cause of death was a Coronary Occlusion, a heart attack caused by the obstruction of blood flow in a coronary artery.
Katherine is survived by her son, Robert Bernard Lyon; daughter, Catherine Louise Marvin; 6 grandchildren, and by her brother, Capt. Peter Leonard McQuillan of California. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Arrangements were by and Visitation was at the William Slater and Sons Funeral Home on Virginia Avenue in Mount Washington. A Requiem High Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Justin's on Saturday, January 7, 1961, with Father J.B. Barry as the celebrant.
