Only 25, this German married woman from Frankfort am Maine is mourned by her family. The marble base is very beautiful but the column has badly disintegrated. Thomas Seidel in Berlin notes: 'Mathilde Wesendonck-Eckhard was the first wife of Otto Wesendonck [* 03/16/1815 in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) - † 11/18/1896 in Berlin], a silk merchant from Elberfeld. He was the owner of a share company in New York (Loeschigk, Wesendonck & Co). In 1844 he married Mathilde Eckhard, but she died during their honeymoon in Florence and was buried there. Later he met Agnes Luckemeyer [* 12/23/1828 in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) - † 08/31/1902 Traunblick at the Traunsee (Austria)] and married her 1848.The music world owes a great deal to therelationship between Richard Wagner and Mathilde Wesendonck - including Tristan and Isolde and the Wesendonck-Lieder.
