Thomas Seidel in Berlin notes: 'Mathilde Wesendonck-Eckhard was the first wife of Otto Wesendonck [* 03/16/1815 in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) - † 11/18/1896 in Berlin], a silk merchant from Elberfeld. He was the owner of a share company in New York (Loeschigk, Wesendonck & Co). In 1844 he married Mathilde Eckhard, but she died during their honeymoon in Florence and was buried there. Later he met Agnes Luckemeyer [* 12/23/1828 in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) - † 08/31/1902 Traunblick at the Traunsee (Austria)] and married her 1848.The music world owes a great deal to therelationship between Richard Wagner and Mathilde Wesendonck - including Tristan and Isolde and the Wesendonck-Lieder.
