Alphonse, was the son of Prarvino Macchioni and Doris Macchioni, the dear nephew of Mary Maccarone of Johnson Rhode Island. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 13, 1965 in Hartford Connecticut, and arrived in Vietnam on February 28 1968 where he was assigned to and served with H&S Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st Marine Division, (Rein) FMF.

During the beginning of May, the first Battalion was deployed in the vicinity of Hue in Thua Tien Province and at mid May redeployed to Quang Nam province to participate on Operation Allen Brook on Go Noi Island.

On May 29, in the vicinity of the hamlet of Phu Tay (1) in Dien Ban District while attached to Company B, Cpl Macchioni was wounded by a .45 gunshot when the weapon was accidently discharged by a Marine. He was transported to the NSA USN Station Hospital in DaNang where he died on the following day as a result of the wound he had sustained.
