Jerry Ralph Tedesco was born in Newark, New Jersey, on Aug. 1, 1923.
He served in World War II as a US Navy radioman in the Pacific theater. After his service, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Seton Hall University. He then married Marie Mangano of Garfield, New Jersey. The couple had three children: Jerry Jr., Laure Ann and Eileen. He and Marie had five grandchildren and two step grandchildren.
Jerry worked as an accountant for Motor Clubs of America for a number of years before starting his own insurance company in Vineland, New Jersey. He was active in the community, particularly in Kiwanis, where he served a term as president. His insurance customers were devoted to him and often stopped in just to visit and chat.
Jerry was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 1991, and was given six months to live. He courageously endured months of grueling chemotherapy and radiation. For nearly three years he was unable to eat or drink anything and had a stomach peg. Despite all this he never, ever lost his sense of humor. His doctors, nurses and health care workers always commented on how much they enjoyed his company.
He would later astonish doctors by apparently beating the especially aggressive cancer. He would go on to live five more years – and even was able to eat and drink again and briefly returned to work.
Jerry died on July 6, 1996 in Newcomb Hospital in Vineland, NJ, surrounded by family members. He is loved and missed every day.
