Leone "Nonie" Virginia Abbott passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at her son's home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Nonie was born on June 9, 1932, in Butte to William and Gwendolyn Brown. She grew up in Butte, graduating from McKinley Elementary and Butte High School in 1950.

As a child, Nonie enjoyed swimming and skiing. She won her first swimming race at the Country Club, beating her friend, Georgia, and coming home with a brand new swim suit. While in high school, Nonie was on the varsity ski team and she lifeguarded at the Camp Fire camp. Nonie loved to spend time in the summer at their farm in Stevensville. She fondly remembered roller skating through the tunnels at Montana Tech, when her father was the registrar there.

After high school, Nonie attended the University of Montana majoring in physical education. She was a member of the Aqua Maids (synchronized swimming) and the Alpha Phi sorority. While at UM, she met Bob Abbott of Kalispell on the slopes of Big Mountain. After three years of dating, they married on July 5, 1953. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon driving to Lackland AFB, Texas, where Bob had orders from the Air Force. Their next stop was the F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., where they started their family. Next stop was Whiteman AFB, Mo. Then in 1955, Nonie and Bob moved to Helena, where they lived for 49 years. They have three sons, Bruce, Scott and Doug.

Nonie followed her sons and their sports teams all over the state and was always a willing substitute catcher for Bruce and receiver for Doug. And once her boys had families of their own, she loved spending time watching her grandchildren play basketball, hockey, football, track, softball, baseball, cross-country and in band.

Nonie worked for School District #1 as a special education substitute teacher for 30 years. She also worked for the Red Cross heart fund. Nonie enjoyed bridge club, knitting socks at Christmas for children in St. Peter's Hospital and baking cookies for veterans at Fort Harrison.

After Bob's death in 2004, Nonie left many dear friends in Helena and moved back to Butte to be closer to her family. She spent time renewing old friendships and making new friends and getting together with her sorority sisters. She was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and recently joined the P.E.O.

Nonie was preceded in death by her husband; mother and father; parents-in-law, Bob and Marian Abbott; and brother-in-law, Jim Abbott.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Mary Abbott, Billings and Doug Abbott and Mary North-Abbott, all of Butte; her son, Scott Abbott of Bozeman; her grandchildren, Alaina and Brian Abbott of Billings; and Gwenn and Dunk Abbott of Butte; her sister, Marcia Peterson of La Jolla, Calif.; her sister-in-law, Morag Abbott of Beaverton, Ore.; several nieces and nephews; her best friend, Jamie Stenbeck; and many cherished friends.

Memorial services will be celebrated Monday at 2 p.m at Wayrynen Richards Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Easter Seals/Highlands Hospice, 3703 Harrison Ave., Butte, MT 59701.
