GILBERT, Sandra "Sandy" Jean, 47, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016, at her home in Claremont, Va., surrounded by her family. Sandy worked as an office manager for the Virginia Cancer Institute for 16 years. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Garnett "Red" Gilbert. Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 22 years, Garnett "Rusty" Gilbert; daughter, Petty Officer 2nd Class Kirsten Gilbert; son, Kyle Gilbert; parents, John and Helen Mayes; mother-in-law, Sue Gilbert; sister-in-law, Kelly Heath and husband, Chad and their daughter, Kasey; sisters, Linda Martin, Sheila Dixon, Patricia Butler, Mary Townes and Carol Long; brothers, John Chaplin and Richard Chaplin; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Claremont Cemetery, with Rev. Mary Alice Colwell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Hospice of Virginia, 1700 Bayberry Ct., Suite 300, Richmond, Va. 23226, Virginia Cancer Institute, 7202 Glen Forest Dr., Suite 200, Henrico, Va. 23226; or Claremont Cemetery, P.O. Box 314, Claremont, Va. 23899. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel, is serving the family.
