The son of David & Hannah Brooks Bigler, in 1860 he was a miller likely living in Cumberland County, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran of brief and uneventful duration, he enlisted in Shiremanstown, Cumberland County, September 13, 1862, as a corporal with Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 23, 1862.

An 1863 graduate of Jefferson Medical College, he married Emma Elizabeth ?, but she apparently was out of the picture quite early and not mentioned in his obituary. He married Amelia M. Boyer October 12, 1865, and fathered William Mitchell (b. 09/08/66), Edith M. (b. @1868), and Mable B. (b. 05/04/71 - married J. Andrew Thompson). In 1870, he lived in Wrightsville, York County, in 1880-90, in Windsor Township, York County, which he represented in the state legislature. He even lived for a time in Tampa, Florida, but returned to Pennsylvania in 1897 and died in Dallastown from "bronchial pneumonia" with "old age" a contributing factor. He was an original member of the Cumberland County Historical Society.
