Donald's health was apparently failing, as is evident in the documentary when his body is found. In the documentary, it appears that he fell while attempting to take a shower and hit his head on the leg of the pedestal sink. The coroners were not sure if he had a heart attack first, and then fell or vice versa. He was discovered by the manager the next morning at 11:00 when he did not check out of his room. The manager heard the shower running and must have assumed that Donald was taking a shower before checking out. When he did not check out a half hour later, the manager came back and noticed the shower was still running and he called the police. The police then entered the room and discovered that Donald has indeed passed away.
Upon his death, all he had on him was a black wallet, miscellaneous papers, farmer's market nutritional coupons, his ID, and $290. LA County holds onto the property for when next of kin can be found. No family could be located for Donald so the county handled his disposition.
During a follow up session with the Coroner's office, it is noted that he is originally from Missouri and did spend some time in Arizona.
