Beulah Belle Holmes was born on November 30, 1936 at her home in rural Graham County, KS to Russell & Lila Grace (Crawford) Wagner. Beulah graduated from Edmond High School in 1954. She then began nursing school at Newman Hospital in Emporia, KS and completed her education as a diploma Registered Nurse in 1957.
On July 20, 1958 Beulah married Paul E. Holmes in Madison, KS. Their daughter Pamela was born on November 4, 1959 and their son Steven was born on October 6, 1961.
Paul & Beulah lived a short time in Madison and then in Richmond, KS. In 1960 they moved to Harper and in 1968 they moved to Valley Center. They returned to their home in Harper in 1981.
Beulah worked as a registered nurse for a doctor in private practice in Emporia as well as working at Newman Hospital. She worked for a short time at the hospital in Garnet, KS. Upon their initial move to Harper she “specialed” various people in the community. Upon their move to Valley Center she worked the 3 to 11 shift at St. Francis Hospital on the pediatric floor. Beulah loved her job at St. Francis and developed life long bonds with patients and families. On their return to Harper she worked at Pykiet Manor in Harper and provided loving care to many patients and their families in the Harper area.
Beulah’s greatest joy in life beyond her family was her seamstress skills, which can only be described as exquisite. Dresses and gowns were created for people she loved simply for the joy and her granddaughters Leslie and Leah were proud wearers of Grandma Beulah’s Easter and Christmas dresses. She belonged to the Smocking Arts Guild of America for many years and her skills and creativity were only enhanced even more. Through this organization she participated in the Wee Care Gown Program and she made hundreds of beautiful tiny smocked gowns for stillborn infants.
Beulah passed away on February 26, 2016 in Harper with her family by her side. She is survived by her spouse, Paul of the home; daughter Pam and Brad Giesen, son Steve and Jaclyn Holmes; grandchildren Russell and Angela Giesen, Leslie and Joel Gerber, Matthew Holmes; great grandchildren Harper Giesen, Cora Belle, Abram, Ruben, and Ike Gerber; sisters Dorothy and Norman Voss, Lila Grace Dumcum, Rosalie and Johnny Merriman; sister-in-law Arlene Ashbey.
Beulah was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Lila, brother David Wagner, brother-in-law Bill Dumcum, and granddaughter Leah Giesen.
Visitation is from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
