On Monday, Dec. 18, 1899. Mrs. A. R. Cormack passed peacefully to a better life. Mary Jane Carter was born Oct. 19, 1838, in Knox County, Tenn. She was married in 1854 to A.R. Cormack and moved in 1871 to Junction City, Kansas. Seven years later the family moved to Solomon City, Kans., where they resided until 1886, when they moved to Delphos. It was here she fell sick with typhoid fever and when nearly recovered, complications set in which caused her death. Her husband and six children survive her. Mrs. Mary D. Townsend, Sante Fe Springs, Cal., Robt. S. Cormack, Crowell, Texas, Mrs. Lucy A. Porter, Henderson, N.C., Mrs. Olney C. Lukens, Biggsvill, Ill., Ernest E. Cormack, Biggsville, Ill. All except Mrs. Townsend were present at the funeral exercise. Four brothers and one sister mourn her death. To these their mother leaves the inheritance of a noble career; she numbered as one of the best of Delphos citizens, a kind parent and a true Christian. Hers was a life work nobly done; may the reward of her life be a benefit to her associates and her spirit reap its reward.
A mother! Sacred be that name!
Far sweeter than the voice of fame!
A mother's love! How deep, how true!
Purer than the crystal drop of dew,
It lightens up the dungeon's gloom,
And fondly lingers 'round the tomb.
(Note: Alexander R. Cormack's name and dates are on this stone, which also notes that he is buried in Crowell, Texas. The cemetery's Old Soldier's List notes he was a Confederate.)
