Herb Erickson, 81, Granville, ND, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, in a Minot hospital.

Herbert "Herb" G. Erickson was born on May 7, 1925, the son of Hellik and Kjersti K. (Haslemo) Erickson on a farm located in Margaret Township of McHenry Co., rural Deering, ND. He was raised on the Erickson family farm, north of Deering and graduated from Deering High School in 1942. Following his high school graduation, he farmed with his brother, Rob, on the Erickson family farm.

He enlisted in the United States Navy on January 22, 1945. He proudly served his country during WWII and was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on July 22, 1946.

Herb married Shirley Hanson on September 4, 1948, in Minot. They made their home on a farm north of Granville, ND, where they raised small grains and livestock. They retired from farming in 1961, when they moved into Granville. In 1961, he began driving truck for Undlin Oil Co., Surrey, ND, and then Texaco Oil Co. He then drove truck for Rice Oil Co. and finally for Behm's Oil Co., before retiring in the mid 1980's.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Granville, the Granville American Legion Post # 155. He was one of the founders of Midwest Chariot Racing.

He enjoyed raising horses and traveling with his three sons to the many horse shows in the area. He also enjoyed doing his yardwork and loved visiting with people and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving family includes: wife of 57 years, Shirley, Granville, ND; sons, Terry (Roberta) Erickson, Minot, ND; Jim Erickson, Granville, ND, and Dennis (Karla) Erickson, Ruso, ND; grandchildren, Laura (Adam) Untz, Valerie (Blake) Meinhardt, Stephanie and Darcie Erickson; and Dallas, Kyle and Travis Erickson; great-granddaughter, Tia Untz; brother-in-law, Doran Hanson, Granville, and Gay (Audrey) Hanson, Minot; sister-in-law, Yvonne Hanson, Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edwin, Henry, Sam, Rob and Gene Erickson; and sisters, Clara Mogard and Marjorie Berg.

Funeral: Thursday, July 13, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Granville.

Interment: Granville Community Cemetery, Granville, ND.

Visitation: Wednesday from Noon to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Prayer Service: Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
