Officers of a South Korean military vessel, stationed at Long Beach, will be among pallbearers today at services for the Rev. Walter J. Bateman, 68, director of the Armed Forces Service Center here.

The Rev. Mr. Bateman of 1536 Meade Avenue died Saturday in a hospital. He was director of the service center at 846 Fifth Ave for 18 years. He was known internationally for his work with foreign military personnel training on liberty here.

An Assembly of God minister 30 years, Bateman was a native of Ida Grove, Iowa. He was the son of the late John D. Bateman formerly of Kansas City, Mo Methodist minister, and religious magazine editor.

The Rev. Mr. Bateman, an Army veteran of World War I, was a member of Barracks 240 Veterans of World War I and The Gideon Society.

Surviving are his widow, Esther, two sons, Charles Phillip and Walter, Jr. who will serve as pallbearers with three officers of the Korean destroyers Seoul, a daughter Mrs. Marcia Fulle of Santee and 10 grandchildren.

An honor guard of six enlisted men from the Korean vessel also will participate in the services at 11:00 a.m. today in Lewis Colonial Mortuary. Military committal services will follow in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery with burial at El Camino Memorial Park.
