Mary Virginia Sims “Tootsie” Minnick, 88, of Silver Spring, Md., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born in Spotsylvania County on Nov. 28, 1927, to the late Joseph and Nettie T. Simms. She graduated from Spotsylvania High School.

Mary was a member of Spencerville Free Methodist Church in Spencerville, Md. She loved gardening and her work in later years at Montgomery County elementary schools and senior center.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 31 years, Walter Lee Minnick; brothers Joseph “Jody” Simms and Linwood “Sonny” Simms of Spotsylvania; and two sisters, Marie S. Garner of Maryland and Margaret S. Burraker of Virginia.

Survivors include her three daughters, Lillian M. Kirkendall (Don) of Florida and Virginia L. Ricciuti (John) and Doris J. Minnick of Maryland; her sisters Laura S. Potts (Robert) and Pearl Johnson of Fredericksburg; her brothers Roy A. Simms (Doris) and Raymond L. Simms (Bonnie) of Spotsylvania; her grandchildren, Michelle R. Bethke (Robert) and Angela Ricciuti of Maryland; her great-grandchildren, Ashley Lynn and Hunter Ricciuti of Maryland; great-stepgrandaughter Ashley Dawn Bethke and her son, Aiden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., at Johnson Funeral Home, 31440 Constitution Highway, Locust Grove, with the Rev. Charles Beahm officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery in Mine Run.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 32250 Old Plank Road, Locust Grove, VA 22508.
