"Devil Horse" Rieves enlisted in Company H of the 1st (Maney's or Feild's) Tennessee Infantry on May 9, 1861 as a private. He fought in major battles such as Shiloh, Perryville, Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, Franklin, and Nashville. He was badly wounded in the right hip during the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro), but he voluntarily returned to service. In February 1864, he was reported to be a second corporal. In 1865 he was furloughed to visit relatives in West Tennessee, and he was returning to his unit with Forrest's troops when they surrendered in April 1865 at Gainsboro, Alabama. He was paroled from that location in May 1865.
