Saturday evening brought to this city word of the death of Mr. Lyman Coats, of the Town of Oswego. He died at six in the evening. So suddenly did all this occur that some of his nearest neighbors and relatives did not hear of the attack until informed of his death. Lyman Coats was the second son of the late Chauncey and Mary Coats, were among the early settlors of the Town of Oswego. He was born on the place where he died, on the 31st day of July, 1816, and was consequently seventy four years of age. His mother, Mrs. Mary Coats, was one of the origiual members of the First Presbyterian church of this city. One of his earliest memories is riding horseback with his mother to receive the rite of baptism. Mr. Coats was a man of much intelligence and in his earlier yems was a school teacher. During all the
years he has been one of the best known, most highly respected citizens of his Native town. He was never ambitious for public office but served as town supervisor. Mr Coats took a deep interest in the Old Settlers Organization and was for many years President of the same. Mr Coats had two brothers and one sister, the oldest member of the family Mr Spencer Coats went west many years ago where he still resides, Mrs Mary Pease died several years since in Providence RI her remains in the Rural Cemetery. Hi sbrother Warren Coats still survives him. His wife and only child Veata Coats also survive.
