OBIT - Arkansas Democrat & Gazette - Thursday - 28 January 2016

HAMBURG - Floy Barnes, 93, of Hamburg, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at her residence in Hamburg. She was born in Moro Bay, Arkansas, October 31, 1922. She was the second of five children born to Oscar nd Birdie Watson Johnston. She graduated from Arkansas A&M where she was a campus beauty and a member of Who's Who. Here she met the love of her life, Philip Eugene "Gene" Barnes. During WW11, she lived in the Rose Inn and taught school in Crossett. One day Floy's class was interrupted by an airplane buzzing the school. Gene was flying across country and buzzed the school where Floy was teaching. All the students ran outside to wave, causing quite fuss in the community. She and Gene married and moved from Monticello to Warren to Locust Bayou. In 1952, they moved to Hamburg. She was active in her church, First United Methodist Church, where she was on the board, in the choir and taught Sunday School. For many years, she was an active member of the Hamburg Garden Club. She also worked in the family business, P.E. Barnes Lumber. She loved gardening and had a green thumb. She was a good cook, an avid hunter and accompanied her men on many hunting ventures. She is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, P.E. Barnes, Sr. in 1999; a great-granddaughter, Judith Rosamond Barnes in 2008; her parents, Oscar and Birdie Johnston and three sisters (Charlotte, Mary Sue, Betty Jean). She leaves behind her children, Phil and Inez Barnes, Anne and Jim Porter, Bob and Joy Barnes, Jaye and Alan Davis, all of Hamburg, a brother, O.B. Johnston of Pine Bluff; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Gene, Julie and Bruin Barnes, Jim, Sara, Kathryn and Rowland Barnes; Rob, Anna Beth and Bo Barnes; Jay and Laura Porter; Julia, Dave, Aubrey and Leila Shelton; Brady, Brian, Sadie and Barrett McDuffy; Britt, Katie and Winnie Barnes; Anna, Eric and Hudson Greenhaw; Ben, Mary, Sallie and Shepherd Crismon and Philip and Sara Davis. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2016, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Comer and Rev. Ben Crismon officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery.
