Master musician Benny Williams died Thursday in Saint Thomas Hospital, from natural causes. For nearly fifty years, Benny was noted as one of country music's most accomplished musicians, singers and songwriters. During the span of career, he shared the spotlight with such greats as Mac Wiseman, Bill Monroe, Marty Robbins, Grandpa Jones, Jimmy Martin, Kitty Wells and Johnny Wright, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Stonewall Jackson, Reno and Smiley and Porter Wagoner. He was proficient in autoharp, mandolin, guitar, banjo and most notably fiddle. He joined the Bluegrass Boys in 1961, first playing guitar but switched to fiddle. He sang lead vocal on a recording of "Cotton Fields". He was a recipient of the IBMA Pioneers of Bluegrass award.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Fred Williams; sisters, Margaret Daniels and Jean Williams. He is survived by his daughter, Della Lee Williams; step daughter, Kathy Louvin-Pearson; granddaughters, Monica Horton and Tiffany Williams; six great grandchildren; two brothers, L.C. and Billy Ray Williams; sixteen nieces and nephews.
Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
