Sharp in academics and a diligent student, Burns developed a refined taste for music and was well-read and cultured by his early teens and adulthood. In the 1950s, inspired by authors and musicians of the Beat Generation, he enjoyed reading the writings of Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg and listening to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Gerry Mulligan and other talented jazz musicians of the social and literary movement. Like his younger brother David, he also liked writing music and singing in local pubs.
Burns was a veteran of the British Royal Air Force, having served from November of 1955 to November 1958. In his lifetime, he faced some of the most difficult circumstances with strength and courage and was sadly a victim of suicide, losing his life at the Mayday Hospital in Croydon, Surrey. Burns was a loving son, nephew, cousin, brother, and compassionate friend and was loved dearly by his Aunt Pat and family.
