Civil War:
Company H.
102nd Regiment Ohio Infantry

Private Waldorf enlisted in Co. H, 102nd OVI, on 7 August 1862 at the age of 18. While the regiment was garrisoned in Decatur, AL, on 24 September 1864, Private Waldorf was assigned to a detachment that had the mission of relieving Ft. Henderson, at nearby Athens, AL, that was under siege by rebel cavalry under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. After detraining, the detachment began fighting to gain the fort, and had made good progress, when the fort's commander unexpectedly surrendered. Forrest then forced the detachment, including Private Waldorf, to surrender as well. He was sent to Cahaba Prison, but was exchanged on 22 April 1865. He then survived the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" on 27 April 1865 on his way home. He was mustered out on 6 June 1865 at Columbus, OH.
