Julia was born to Julia and Cornelus C Vulders in Bay County, Michigan in September, 1872. Before her 13th birthday, she lost her mother and half of her siblings, and she started feeling the effects of Friedreich's Ataxia, the disease that would quickly consume her body once she reached adulthood. After her father's death from gastric carcinoma, his cousin and good friend, Jacob and Johanna (van Wert) van Hamlin would take in Julia and give her the contant care that she would need for the next two decades. Julia may have had one of the most "normal" childhoods in her family, a family haunted by disease, disability, pain and death. Though she would never have children of her own, Julia's name was bestowed on the daugthers of several family friends as an inspiration for her strong spirit anc character.

Though the last 8 years of her life were spent in and out of Mercy Hospital to deal with the infections, cardiac thickening, and other debilitating conditions that come with her diagnosis.

She died in September, 1906, surrounded by her immediate and extended family.
