Born November 29, 1940 to Harold Otto and Elizabeth (Wagner) Rau, Joan (pronounced JoAnn), grew up near Reese. She was a 1958 graduate of Reese High School

She married E. James Richard in the 1960s. Together, they raised three beautiful children, Daniel, Jamie and Nicole.

Her passion was raising and showing champion Chow-Chows at AKC events around the country.

After she was stricken by a grave illness, her family rallied to her aid. Her daughter, Jamie, in particular, was credited by Jim's sister Valery as being her mother's constant angel. She succumbed on December 28, 1997.

In addition to her husband and children, Joan was survived by her brother, Don (Susann) Rau of Reese and many nieces and nephews.
