Verle Leland "Sheet" McDowell was born on the family farm north of Mooreland on October 10, 1918; he was the son of Earl Eugene and Tresa Agnes Vogt McDowell. He attended Moorland schools. Skeet was drafted into the U. S. Army, served during World War II in Germany where he received the Purple Heart. In 1947, he was married to Beulah Thomas in Woodward. They made their home in Mooreland. He worked in several Cities Service Compressor plants in Pampa, Texas, Ulysses, Kansas, Greenburg, Kansas and Straight, Oklahoma. His wife preceded him in death on April 28, 1961. In 1962, he returned to the gas plant in Mooreland. On December 9, 1962, he was married to Marjorie Hill Crawford in Mooreland. They made their home in Mooreland and Skeet retired from Cities Service in 1981. Due to his health, they moved to Woodward in 1998.
Skeet was a member of the Woodward V.F.W. Post #1335 and the Oddfellows Lodge.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie McDowell, Woodward; three sons Doug McDowell and wife Joyce, of Sharon; Ray Crawford and wife Lori, of Kingfisher; Danny McDowell and wife Barbara, of Mooreland; two daughters, Carol Gastineau and husband John, of Woodward; Pala Farmer and husband Gerald, of Green Forest, Arkansas; two brothers, Warren McDowell and wife Gladys, Mooreland; C. A. "Bid" McDowell and wife Leona, Mooreland; one sister, Glenda Ingraham and husband Walter, of Buffalo; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and a special nephew Kenneth "Red" McDowell, of Winner, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers,two sisters, one son, Bobby Crawford and one daughter, Connie Crawford.
