According to the newspaper obituary Alfred was born in 1818 and was 83 years, 7 months of age at the time of death. However, according to the 1880 and 1900 censuses he was born in 1820.

Alfred served as a body servant to Col. Sidney Stokes in the Confederate Army.

There is interesting information in the Freedmen's Bureau Records (registers of leters) for North Carolina about Alfred Stokes organizing a school in Wilksboro in 1867. The records indicate he had 20 pupils in December 1967.

In the 1880 census Alfred was listed as a minister. He and and his wife, Susan, were living in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, with eight children. In the 1900 census Susan was listed as the mother of ten children.

He lived in Dallas from 1881 until his death. He was an ordained minister for thirty-eight years. His funeral services were conducted by the Colored Ministers' Association.

The grave is not marked, and its location in the cemetery is unknown.
