Elaine Helen Orzechowski, a retired teacher, died Jan. 27 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 72. Born in Buffalo, Ms. Orzechowski attended St. Louis School and Mount St. Mary Academy. She earned a degree in elementary education from D'Youville College. Seeking adventure, she took a teaching job in Sitka, Alaska, and was there during the 1964 earthquake. She later taught first and second grade in New Mexico, Florida and West Virginia before returning to Western New York in the 1970s to help care for elderly family members. Locally, she taught in Elba and Buffalo. A resident of the Weinberg Campus in Getzville, she enjoyed movies music and reading. She played piano and organ and served as a church organist in Sitka. Being a huge movie fan she also adored watching the academy awards every year on TV for decades. Her father, Leo Orzechowski, was a WWII Purple Heart recipient having died during the Battle of the Coral Sea on the USS Sims in 1942 and her Grandparents, Andrew and Mamie Backe, were actors in Vaudeville. Elaine never married. Survivors at the time of her death included nieces Cynthia & Sandra Jones, a nephew, Craig Jones of California and several cousins in Buffalo, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the old church at St. Mary Catholic Church, 6919 Transit Road in Swormville.
