In 1910 he, his parents, two siblings, and a servant, 24-year-old Rosa Hester, lived in a house they owned, with a mortgage, at 3504 Olive Street in Kansas City, MO. His father worked as a commercial traveler and Robert as a clerk. Rosa worked as their cook. He married Dorothy Biedermann July 5, 1919 in Jackson County, MO.

In 1920 he and his parents lived in an apartment they were renting at 2519 Linwood Boulevard #2 in Kansas City, MO. His father worked as a commercial traveler for a roofing manufacturing company and he as a clerk for the government.

In 1930 the three of them lived in an apartment they were renting for $80 a month at 4800 Jefferson Street in Kansas City, MO. They did have a radio. His father's occupation was given as farmer, although he was no doubt retired by then. He worked as an automobile salesman.

In 1940 he lived in an apartment he was renting for ten dollars a month at 701 Westport Road in Kansas City, MO. He worked as a taxi driver for a taxi service, with an income in 1939 of $920 for 52 weeks of work. He married Fay Margaret Bloom May 29, 1943 in Jackson County, MO.
