Capt. Richard M. Lewis, Sr., US Army, Ret., 89, of Indianapolis, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 30, 1926 in Indianapolis the son of Harold C., Sr. and Gladys B. (Cozatt) Lewis.

Richard graduated from Howe High School in Indianapolis and served our country for 30 years in WWII, Korea and the Vietman wars. He was drafted in the latter part of WW II, sent to Fort McClellan, Alabama for basic training and was assigned to 1st Cavalry Division where he was one of the last horse mounted cavalry. He served as an infantry Recon and Intel Platoon Sergeant and later Platoon Leader having become a battlefield commissioned officer during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

After retirement from the Army he served as an instructor and supervisor with Lincoln Technical Institute for 17 years.

Richard is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Dorothy (Nance) Lewis; sons, Carl E. "High Pockets" Lewis (Cheryl) of Sand Springs, OK, Richard M Lewis, Jr. (Becky) of Clay City, IN, Gail C. Grimes (Richard) of Greenfield, IN, David W. Lewis (Linda) of Carrollton, GA and Thomas M. Lewis (Kim) of Indianapolis, IN; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great granddaughter, Breanna Nicole Brown and his brothers, Harold "Bud" Lewis, Jr. and Donald E. Lewis.
