Brother Len and I were teaching colleagues at St. John Vianney HS in St. Louis for 10 years. In his 63 years as a Marianist brother, he was a teacher, administrator, principal, and friend to all.
Leonard was the son of Kast and Joanna Rudy of East St. Louis, Illinois. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic grade school and Central Catholic high school.
Leonard was influenced by the Marianists at Central Catholic and entered the novitiate at Marynook in Galesville, Wisconsin. He first professed his vows in 1952.
Leonard graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1955, with a B.A. in Social Studies.
Brother Len began his Marianist career teaching social studies at Marianist schools in Texas (St. Joseph's HS and Central Catholic HS) and Missouri (McBride HS).
He professed his perpetual vows at Marynook in 1957.
In 1959, he accepted a teaching assignment at Colegio Santa Maria school in Lima, Peru.
He returned to the United States in 1964 to teach at Don Bosco High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In 1967, he was appointed principal of the Santa Maria Junior High in Lima, Peru. He became principal of Colegio Santa Maria, in 1971. Two years later, Brother Len was named superior of the Marianist community in Lima and remained in the post until 1976.
After 16 years in Peru, Brother Len returned to the United States to serve in formation ministry
at the Marynook Marianist novitiate. The following four years, he served as senior dorm prefect at Chaminade College Preparatory in St. Louis.
In 1981, he accepted the position of assistant principal at St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis. During the summers, he worked towards his M.A. in Secondary Education Administration through the University of San Francisco (1985).
From 1984 to 1992, Brother Len was principal at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio. He often commented on how rewarding and gratifying his experience at Central Catholic was to his personal growth and his life.
Starting in 1994, Brother Len taught religion for 10 years at St. John Vianney until his retirement from full-time ministry in 2004. During those year, he was the spiritual moderator for the Vianney swimming team. He always referred to himself as the "waterboy". His presence in the Vianney hallways was an inspiration to the students and teachers and tribute to his commitment to his Marianist vows.
Brother Len was a wonderful man; and, I truly valued our friendship.
God Bless you, good friend--you touched our hearts and made us better people!
