Russell “Gus” Dean John was born April 1, 1956 in Minneapolis and was raised in Northfield. At the age of 9 he bought his first guitar and playing music was a lifelong passion and he played in a number of bands. He attended school in Northfield graduating in 1974. In 1978 he was united in marriage to Brenda Glewwe and they had 2 children Luke and Autum. They were later divorced.
He worked at Sheldahl’s in Northfield for 21 years and then worked on the grounds crew for the Northfield School System. He later was on the school district’s maintenance staffs first at Red Wing and then Cannon Falls. In addition to his love for music he was an avid fan of the Vikings, Dundas Dukes Baseball, and Northfield Football teams. He bought his first motorcycle in 1974 and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson.
Gus Johnson is survived by life partner Barb Kniefel of Cannon Falls; son Luke Johnson of Northfield; daughter Autum Johnson of St, Paul; sister Vicki (Mark) Roline of Spring Valley, WI; brother Scott (Carrie) Johnson of Elko; grandchildren Mara Johnson, Ava Adelmann, Mallory Ohnstad, and Melea McIlvaine. He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Johnson and brother Warren Johnson.
