Mason Nutter Hartman of Needham, formerly of Brookline, a World War II veteran, died Friday at his home after a brief illness. He was 81.

Born in Newton he later moved to Brookline before settling in Needham.

Mr. Hartman graduated from Boston University with the class of 1949, earning a degree in physics.

He served in the Army's 119th Infantry, 30th Division, in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II, earning a Bronze Star in combat in Aachen, Germany. He also took part in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Jubilee of Liberty Medal, established by the French government to honor the veterans of the Normandy Invasion. In December of 2001, he was honored by the French government for his contribution to the liberation of France aboard the French aircraft carrier Jeanne d'Arc, which was docked in Boston Harbor for the occasion.

After graduating from Boston University, Mr. Hartman joined his family business, Vita Needle Co. in Needham and later became president and chairman.

A lover of music, he sang in the choir at Carter Memorial Methodist Church in Needham for more than 20 years. He was also a longtime member of the Boston Wesleyan Association, and publisher of Zion's Herald, a journal of religious opinion, following in the footsteps of his father, who was the editor of the journal before his election as a bishop of the Methodist Church. Mr. Hartman also served as president of the Libraries of Boston University and later served on its board of directors and on the board of visitors for the School of Theology.

Husband of Nancy Marsh Hartman, Mr. Hartman is survived by a son, Frederick Mason Hartman of Wellesley; a daughter, Robin Hartman Mosgrove of Needham; a brother, Richard O. of Dunedin, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. tomorrowat Carter Memorial United Methodist Church, Needham.

Burial is private.
