Note - this appears to be the Charles Lyman POWELL married to Franziska "Fanny" (WURM) in 1914 in New Ulm, Brown county, Minnesota. They were restaurant proprietors / managers and around 1920 they needed passports to Germany via Holland to deal with her father's estate there since his death circa 1919 ~1920. Her parents were from Bavaria and she listed her birthplace as Germany/Bavaria.

Around Sep 1920 they sold their "hotel/restaurant" in tiny St Clair, Blue Earth county, Minnesota and made a trip back to New Ulm to visit her aunt & uncle, Rosa & Marvin John Wurm. After staying a few days they were off to Chicago to visit family and get passports, and then on to New. York City to catch a boat, the SS Amsterdam. to return to Bavaria to visit her widowed mother, Mrs. Franz "Frank" WURM. Franz Wurm would be a brother to Marvin John Wurm back in New Ulm.

It appears Charles actual birthday was 7 Feb 1872, and NOT 5 Feb 1878 as he later claimed. He may have fudged his age circa 1920 and claimed to be younger. Perhaps due to his younger second wife, "Hattie (BOUGHTON) or his third wife, Franziska "Fanny" (WURM).

It is NOT entirely certain that this is the father of Earl Strong POWELL, as I have located two Charles Lyman POWELL's... one was a lawyer in Chicago, and this one was generally located in Iowa, Illinois, perhaps up into southern Wisconsin & Minnesota, before apparently retiring back to Iowa. The location of these residences seems to suggest this Charles Lyman POWELL buried in Iowa is my great-grandfather. NOT the lawyer who lived in Chicago IL. Although, this C.L. POWELL's mother lived in the Chicago area with her second husband, John POWERS.

HOWEVER... given that my grandfather was born around 1895... it seems that the birth year for this man is more likely to be 1872 based on the 1880 census when his mother (Julia STEBBINS) and her second husband, John POWERS listed his age as 8 years old.

It appears much more likely that this Charles Lyman POWELL was actually born Feb 1872 in Burlington IA to Charles H. POWELL and Julia STEBBINS. This info is confirmed in his 1920 passport application and a backup letter from his mother's (subsequent) husband, C.L. POWELL's step-father & step-uncle POWERS.

If the date of his birth were 1872 +/- a year due to Census inaccuracy... than it is quite possible.
And... as his (second?) wife was younger, then perhaps he fudged his birth date for his 2nd marriage.
This requires more investigating.

A newspaper advertisement titled "Father is Sought", circa Nov 1938 from the Rockford IL newspaper suggests that my grandfather, Earl, was searching for his father circa 1938 and that his father, Charles, had "been seen" in Rockford IL circa 1932, and had previously lived "for some time" in Webster City, Iowa.

The other thing in that 1938 paper advertisement was a reference to C. L. POWELL having been raised by his grandparents, Mr & Mrs E. ANDERSON (sp?) in Rochelle IL. So that would have been by age 18, from 1872... meaning he might have graduated from a school in Rochelle IL around 1890.

Various documents have suggested that my Charles Lyman POWELL was born in Burlington, Iowa. Or... perhaps it was Burlington NY (?)... where several POWELL's came from, including a cluster that settled in southern Wisconsin and featured the name, Lyman... as given & middle names for some of their children. Another area of possible research. Some of C L Powell's second wife's family (BOUGHTON) were also present in southern WI around Brodhead and Monroe WI.

The only thing known for certain is that this memorial exists in Iowa for Charles L POWELL and his wife, Fanny M POWELL. The details remain to be confirmed. It is believed he had been living in Marshalltown, Iowa roughly from 1921 to his death in 1942. Unknown where his wife/widow lived after 1942/

Gravesite Details

From the SW corner of the cemetery, he is 5 pine trees east along the road, and 3 pine trees North of the road. Facing east, you can easily read the name POWELL from the nearby gravel Dexfield Road (?).
