William Sumner Fancher, 89, of Walton passed away Saturday, June 10, 2006, at his home in Walton.
He was born in Walton on Nov. 3, 1916, to Veronica Odenkirchen Fancher and Samuel H. Fancher Jr.
Graduating from Walton High School in 1934, he graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, in 1940. He attended Cornell University School of Law and entered the New York State Bar in March 1942.
He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in May 1942 and was deployed to England as a B-17G navigator with the 711th Bombardment Squadron, 447th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force in No-vember 1943. He flew 20 missions before he was wounded, finishing his honorable duty as a 1st Lieutenant on Nov. 28, 1945.
He practiced law with his father from 1946 to 1948, continuing with his own practice until Nov. 2, 2002.
A long-time active member of the Walton Fire Department Hook-and-Ladder Company No. 3, American Legion Post No. 32, and Christ Episcopal Church.
