He taught high school art in the Chicago suburbs for several years. He later joined his father’s construction business, Harry V. Johnson and Sons, with his twin brother, Fred. They built many notable homes in the area, including designs by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Phil was a well known landscape artist, painting beautiful nature scenes of the North Woods. His paintings reflected his love of time he spent at Long Lake in Phelps, WI at his childhood family cabin and later his own lake house.
Phil was an avid fisherman and loved being at the lake with his family. He was a long standing member of Temple Baptist Church and was one of the founders of Rockford Christian Schools. He is survived by his wife, Lorna; sons Greg (Hazel), Robert and Tom (Pam); grandchildren , Becky (Jake) Borkhus, Talie Johnson, Sara Wollin and Matt (Kim) Wollin; four great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, Harry V. and Ruth Johnson; sisters, Barbara Ericson and Elaine Kime; brothers, Richard Johnson and Fred Johnson.
