He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 18, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Apprentice.

Joe was "Killed In Action" in a mid-air collision with B-17G #43-37941 over France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
