Walter Wallace Simmons was the son of Walter and Mildred Simmons, and married Viola Bernetta Quigley. Walter and Viola had two sons.

He was an employee of Imperial Oil Company and was returning from a business trip to the Maritimes when he was killed in the crash of Trans Canada Airlines Flight 831 on 29 November 1963 shortly after the jet departed from Dorval International Airport at Montréal. Walter, his wife and sons were residents of Toronto.

Walter's funeral was held in Toronto on 7 December 1963, with subsequent interment at St. John's Norway Cemetery. There is a Monument for Walter on the wall in Cimetière de Saint-Thérèse which is engraved with all of the names of the crash victims.
