On Tuesday, July 3, 1917, Patrolman John P. Flood was beaten to death with his own night stick at 502 East 77th Street in Manhattan, NYC.

Towards the end of his tour of duty (which would have ended at approximately at 4 pm), his wife met him on post and both were making plans for the afternoon. After his wife's visit, Patrolman Flood was approached by a woman, Mrs. Kitty Mannix, who told him there was a man (Milton Bleier, a Bronx prize fighter) in her apartment who threatened to kill her.

Patrolman Flood walked with the woman to the apartment. When Patrolman Flood entered, he was attacked by the suspect. The suspect was able to gain control of Patrolman Flood's night stick and beat him to death. The perpetrator was then captured in Baltimore six months later and then confessed to the crime. On a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison when he could've been sentenced to death.

Patrolman Flood was survived by his wife. He was assigned to the 31st Precinct.
