John Adams was the fifth child of Francis and Mary Buck Adams, Born June 14, 1714, in Plymouth. Six years later he moved with his parents to Kingston. After completing a "common school" education, John took up his father's trade as a clothier and dyer. John married Thankful Washburn who bore him ten children.
John was industrious, economical and accumulated considerable property. A large man who had great physical power he was "of gentle address," according to the Adams Genealogy, "but rather blunt in his expressions." To the suffering he was hospitable, and ever ready to assist the needy.
John Adams enjoyed the confidence of his townsmen, having been chosen town clerk and treasurer. At seventy years of age, John Adams was appointed deputy sheriff and served sixteen years.
John Adams lived to the age of ninety-two, dying in 1806. Certainly a remarkable feat for the time.
