SUPERCENTENARIAN:
Hazel was the second oldest living Iowan at the time of her "graduation". She missed being the oldest by just two weeks, when Bessie Hendricks, age 115, passed away on January 3, 2023.

Hazel is a noble and worthy Christian woman who is highly revered by a very large family. At the age of 105, she remains active and lives in her own apartment. She was one of twelve children, the exact middle in birth order. Although she had no children of her own, she had 28 nieces and nephews.
She is survived by five generations of adoring family, including three nieces: Lois Whitehurst, Darlene Mitchell, and Sondra Ridley, one nephew: Larry Davis, 87 great nieces and nephews; at last count there were 109 second great-grand, a minimum of 59 third, and a number of fourth great-grand nieces and nephews, scattered across the country. She is the last of her siblings to be summoned home, as well as the longest living.
She goes to church on a regular basis, goes out to dinner with family, makes visits to the museum, and is quite the social butterfly; who knows what else she accomplishes from day-to-day. No nursing home or even a walker for her! Although suffering an injured hip and later a shoulder, and enduring a mild case of shingles since she turned 100, she has been quite alert and healthy.
In 2018 she made a plane trip across country (at age 108!), to visit her brother, with an intrepid traveling companion, great-niece, Melinda, where they were met by other family members who had traveled to meet her there.

Hazel Pearl Davis Young passed away on December 17, 2022, in Altoona, IA at the age of 112. She was born on June 13, 1910, in Walnut, IA to Robert and Celeste (Engleman) Davis. Hazel was one of 12 children and the last one to be called Home.

Hazel attended school in a one room school house in Atlantic, IA. On April 30, 1929, she married Frank Young and they shared many years together until his death in 1973. She and Frank lived in their own home in Des Moines. Hazel then moved to an assisted living apartment building for seniors where she lived until December of 2018. She moved into her current home at Altoona Nursing and Rehab at the age of 108. Although Hazel didn't have any children of her own she helped raised her nieces and nephews.

Hazel worked a variety of jobs throughout her life including a hosiery mill, two dime stores, a soap factory and LOOK Magazine. While she and Frank lived in Boston during WWII she even built and inspected airplane parts. In addition to working, she also loved to spend her free time volunteering and faithfully attending her church, Glad Tidings Assembly of God, several times a week. Hazel attributed her long life and so many years of good health to her faith.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; 11 siblings; and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by one nephew, three nieces; as well as a host of other loving family and many special friends. Hazel will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services will be held at Glad Tidings Assembly of God, 314 E. Army Post Rd, in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., with service to follow at 11 a.m., on Thursday, December 29, 2022. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery beside her husband.
