Hunter Clyde Fletcher, 74, of North Crossett died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at his residence. Born March 28, 1925, to Sam and Annie Pledger Fletcher, he was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and landed on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy. In one encounter, he was the only man to survive an attack on a German machine gun nest and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and combat infantryman's badge. He was wounded near the town of St. Lo, France, when an artillery shell landed among his company. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to his former position at the paper mill in Crossett. He retired after 44 and one-half years of service. He was an active member of North Crossett First Baptist Church and the Church of God.


Survivors include his second wife, Atha Lee Humphrey Fletcher; two daughters, Edna Clydene Fletcher Garner and husband Kenneth of Slaughter, LA, and Janet Elaine Fletcher Rice and husband Dennis of Crossett; one son, Scotty Edward Fletcher and wife Pat of Crossett; one step-son, Darrel Humphrey and wife Sonja of Crossett; three step-daughters, Kay Gannon and husband Norman of Brandon, MS, Gayle Strebeck and husband Tommy and Rita Fox, all of Crossett; one sister, Irene Childers of Dubberly, LA; one brother, Calvin Fletcher of Crossett; five grandchildren and spouses, Kenneth Dean and Julie Garner of Lake Jackson, TX, Mike and Deanna Garner Buhler of Slaughter, Michael and Christie Rice of Crossett, Steven and Laura Rice Hall of Maumelle and Scott and Teresa Fletcher Floyd of Crossett; 10 great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Bates Fletcher; four brothers, John, Cecil, Howard and Everette Fletcher; and two sisters, Marie Fletcher Stanley and Iona Fletcher.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, July 20, at 2 p.m. in the North Crossett First Baptist Church with Revs. Robin Allen and Karvin Adams officiating. Burial was to be follow services at Simms Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.

Grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers were to be Dean Garner, Mike Buhler, Michael Rice, Steven Hall, Scott Floyd and Chad Courson. Honorary pallbearers were to be Johnny Mac, Robert and Glen Fletcher and Dwayne and Roddy Willis.
