Bert Charles Ruth was the oldest of five children of Charles E. and Zelma (Sullivan) Ruth. He served his country in WWI as a Seaman in the U.S. Navy.

He married Elmira (aka "Dorothy") Livingston Derry on 21 June 1922, in Los Angeles County, California. They were the parents of three children:
