Gerald "Jerry" E. Carls, 84, of Yakima, died Thursday, January 29, 1998 in his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jerry was born January 29, 1914 in Altoona, PA and graduated from Altoona High School in 1931. He took courses at Penn State Extension School in Drafting and Engineering, then went to work for the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) doing road building.

In 1935, Jerry traveled to California and began work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1936, Jerry became camp foreman of the Department's "Blister Rust" Campaign near Quincy, California. From 1936 until the fall of 1940, Jerry continued working for the U.S.D.A in various locations in California, then returned to Altoona.

Jerry served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was briefly stationed in Yakima during training. He served on various bomber groups. On June 28, 1945, he was married to Alice Fisher while stationed in Stanstead, England. In 1946, Jerry and Alice returned to the Quincy, California area then back to Altoona. In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Carls returned to Yakima to raise their family. Jerry worked for the Washington State Department of Transportation for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1981 as District Administrator.

Jerry was an excellent wood worker and bowler and loved to read. He was a member of the St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Yakima.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Carls of Yakima; a daughter, Donna and her husband Kenny Robinson of Oklahoma City, Okla; daughter, Debbie and her husband, Rick Carnevali of Olympia, Wash.; son, Tim Carls of Yakima; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman Carls of Snohomish, Wash.; and two sisters Myrna Campbell and Edna Carls, both of Altoona, PA.

Jerry was preceded in death by an infant son; a brother, Harry Carls; and sister, Olive, as well as his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 3, 1998 at the Keith & Keith 9th Avenue Chapel. Concluding services and burial with full military honors conducted by William Wharton Post #379 VFW will follow at Tahoma Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may made to the donor's favorite charity in care of Keith & Keith. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Sunday, 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday and until 12:00 Noon Tuesday.
