Colley approached everything in life with a fine touch.

Whether it was tending to her vegetable garden, setting the silverware just right for dinner or guiding her family through tough times, the matriarch was a steadying force in her North Salem household and the surrounding community.

"She was the heart of our family. The glue that kept us all together," said Bruce Colley, one of her four sons, as he fought back tears in St. James' Episcopal Church, where family and friends gathered Friday to mourn the 83-year-old who was bludgeoned to death this week.

Lois Colley has been a fixture in North Salem for decades with her husband, Eugene, a multimillionaire who made his fortune owning and managing McDonald's franchises. She was found dead Monday afternoon in the laundry room of the family's home, Windswept Farm.

Colley's sons and grandsons carried her casket into the church on Titicus Road shortly after 11 a.m. Following the service her family walked down the street to June Cemetery, where she was buried in a private service. Other attendees headed to a reception at the Waccabuc Country Club.
