Columbus Ledger 26 Feb 1912 p 5
A. R. Callahan Breathes Last
End Come To A Well-Known Columbus Citizen After Three Month's Illness
Had Been Gradually Weakening Since Undergoing Recent Operation
Funeral to Be Held Tuesday Afternoon From Home.

Mr. A. R. Callahan, for years one of the best known citizens of Columbus, died at 5:20 o'clock this morning at his home in Wynnton, and although his demise had not been altogether unexpected by his family and friends, it is nevertheless the occasion of much sorrow among all who knew and admired him. He was 55years of age at the time of his death.

As stated in the Ledger last week Mr. Callahan'd health had been bad for some time, and a short time ago he underwent an operation in one of the local hospitals for a stomach trouble, and despite the fact that everything that love and medical experience could do and suggest, he gradually weakened until the end came this morning at the hour mentioned.

Mr. Callahan up to the time his health failed him, was one of the leading contractors of Columbus, and today there are numbers of business houses and residences that stand as a monument to his ability and experience as an artist in that particular avocation. In elegance of design, style of architecture and methods of construction, Mr. Callahan was ranked among the best in the city and on an equal with those in other cities, and he never failed to completely gratify the wishes of his constituents in every way when it came to erecting homes and business houses.

The deceased gentleman was a member of St. Luke Methodist church and a Christian gentleman in every sense. In church work, as in other walks of life, he was a leader and never failed to do his utmost for the betterment of mankind in every way. He was also a member of Columbus lodge No. 67, I. O. O. F. and also of Mount Herman lodge, F. and A. M. In these orders he was an active member up until the time his ill health forced him to retire from the business world.

Besides his heartbroken wife, Mr. Callahan is survived by two daughters of Columbus, Six brothers, Messrs. R. A., A. B., S. C. and J. M. Callahan of North Carolina, Messrs. W. A. Callahan of South Carolina, and George L. Callahan, of Columbus, and two sisters, Mrs. C. A. Keeter, of North Carolina, and Mrs. H. E. Goode, of the same state, also survive him, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. To all of these, the sympathy of the entire community is extended in their bereavement.

The funeral will take place from his late residence in Wynnton at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, the services to be conducted by his pastor, Rev. Dr. M. A. Morgan, and the interment will be in Linwood cemetery. The orders of which he was a member will probably attend in a body.
